Dwight Hoover is Professor of History at Ball State University. He received his doctorate from the University of Iowa. He has specialized in three facets of American history: intellectual, urban, and black. Among the recurrent themes in his research and publications is that of "Middletown," Muncie, Indiana. He has written widely on cultural and ethnic themes in American life. Especially pertinent to this Symposium is his book, "Henry James, Sr. and the Religion of Community".
