The Use of Leaven

From the Law given to Moses to the Lord’s warnings to His disciples, leaven is used as a symbol of evil and falsity to be avoided. And yet the Lord also said, “the kingdom of heaven is like leaven.” (Matt. 13: 33) The Heavenly Doctrine reveals to us that evil and falsity are permitted by the Lord (carefully, under His Divine providence) to be of service as a “means of purification… promoting the union of goodness and truth in others” (DP 21).
