Worship Service: Family (may include music) - March 24, 2024
When Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday the people cheered and cried out for Him to save them. They were hoping that a king of the natural world was riding into town to throw off their Roman oppressors. That wasn’t what the Lord was there to do but He was there to save them. If a powerful person could ride into your life and change things drastically, what would you want them to do? Maybe the Lord won’t do that, but what sort of spiritual salvation could He give you? This year we will have two identical services, both in the nave (there will be no Young Children’s or Informal Family Service in the Undercroft). There will be one talk for the whole family. At the end of the service, people will be invited to pick up palm branches on their way out of the building to then form a crowd outside and an actor playing the Lord will come past with a live donkey, while people sing and cheer. | By Rev. Worship Service: Sermon only - March 17, 2024
When the Lord’s disciples argued over who might sit on the Lord’s right hand and left hand in heaven, the Lord called them to think differently about greatness: they should seek to be least, rather than greatest, and to serve, rather than being served (Mark 10). How do we live by those teachings? | By Rev. Coleman S. Glenn | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Lord's Last Words
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - March 03, 2024
As we turn our thoughts towards Easter, we can see in “The Lord’s Last Words” on the cross there is infinite divine love offering forgiveness, compassion and hope as the culmination of everything that the Lord said and did, and as an inspiration for how we can care for each other (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19). | By Rev. One of the themes of the Easter story is people seeing the Lord, or not seeing the Lord. These stories can stimulate some interesting questions for us to think about: Have you ever seen the Lord? Do you think you would recognize the Lord if He was in this sanctuary? Can you picture Him in your mind? We will look at what positive things we can do to help us see the Lord so that we can learn to love Him and follow Him wherever He leads. | By Rt. Rev. Bradley D. Worship Service: Vespers - April 06, 2023
At the Last Supper the Lord instituted the Holy Supper, which the Writings call "a kind of guarantee, seal, and token... like a key to a home in heaven.” (True Christian Religion 730) Rev. Jeremy Simons does the readings. Rev. Derek Elphick and Rev. Simons offer the Holy Supper. A reflective Holy Supper service with readings and a talk on the significance of the Last Supper, offering wheat and gluten-free bread, and wine or grape juice. There is something miraculous going on whenever we are engaged in the normal work that we do every day. Understanding what this is may help us to appreciate the miracle of Easter. | By Rev. Jeremy F. Simons | Bryn Athyn CathedralAnticipating Easter
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 19, 2023
(Community Service) Certain traditions are already part of the cycle of our year — we remember to be grateful around Thanksgiving in November, we have a variety of different things we do leading up to Christmas, we have a pageant and picnic for New Church Day in June. But what about February and March? Easter arrives sometime in March or April (depending on the year) but we don’t tend to anticipate and prepare for it in nearly the same way. Let’s talk about how the time leading up to Easter could become an equally powerful and significant part of the cycle of our year. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - April 10, 2022
In the Gospel of John, Palm Sunday is described in the context of the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead. There were those who knew of this miracle and hated the Lord for it; there were those who knew of it but kept quiet from fear; and there were those who knew of it and so joyfully confessed the Lord as their king. It was this last group that welcomed Jesus with palm branches. This Sunday we will explore how we too can bear witness to the Lord and rejoice in His coming. | By Rev. The Lord triumphantly entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. What does this represent about the way the Lord enters our lives? | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallRaising Lazarus from the Dead
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - April 03, 2022
When the Lord raised Lazarus from the dead He showed He had all power, even power over life and death. He also showed that in using his power, He always acts from love and for love. We can't do everything the Lord can do but the Lord gives us the power to do good when we follow the path the Lord modelled for us. (John 11) | By Rev. Barry C. Halterman | Bryn Athyn CathedralJesus Wept: The Human Side of God
Worship Service: Sermon only - April 03, 2022
Throughout the history of religion, God's various qualities have been depicted in various ways in the many different cultures across the globe. In coming on earth as Jesus Christ, the Lord showed us the crucial missing element: God's Humanity. Connecting with God as a Divine Human Being changed the world and it can change us. The people of Jerusalem rejoiced as Jesus rode into the city on Palm Sunday. But they didn't know what kind of a leader He intended to be. Can we accept the Lord as a God who comes to help us? | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn CathedralPalm Sunday: A King Who Comes to Serve
Worship Service: Sermon only - March 28, 2021
Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a lowly donkey. He came to serve all of us. How hard is it to both acknowledge Him as the Infinite God and also one who comes to help each of us in each moment to lead wiser and kinder lives? | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn CathedralPreparing for Easter - the Road to Jerusalem
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 14, 2021
Easter is still pretty far away (7 weeks, more or less). But the time from Ash Wednesday (17 February this year) until Easter Sunday is generally seen as a time of preparation for the holiday. You may remember that last year we suggested giving up a bad habit or picking up a new spiritual practice in this time period. This year we'll suggest similar ways to prepare. Specifically, this Sunday we'll look at how Jesus' steady ascent from the backwater of Galilee along the road up to the metropolis of Jerusalem and His own death can help us prepare for our own celebration of His resurrection at Easter. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSA
