“Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees”
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - September 25, 2022
It was unusual for the Pharisees and the Sadducees to agree about anything, but they were united in opposition to the Lord and His teaching. He compared their influence on the society at the time to leaven, although another time the Lord compared the kingdom of heaven to leaven added to bread dough. This is a story about how the Lord works with us to find what’s truly good in the world we live in. | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Use of Leaven
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 25, 2022
From the Law given to Moses to the Lord’s warnings to His disciples, leaven is used as a symbol of evil and falsity to be avoided. And yet the Lord also said, “the kingdom of heaven is like leaven.” (Matt. 13: 33) The Heavenly Doctrine reveals to us that evil and falsity are permitted by the Lord (carefully, under His Divine providence) to be of service as a “means of purification… promoting the union of goodness and truth in others” (DP 21). | By Rev. Worship Service: Family (may include music) - September 18, 2022
When someone we care about is hurting, we hurt too and we want to help them feel better. There are good ways and not so good ways that we might try to offer comfort. Let's learn from the Lord, our Comforter, how to offer comfort to people around us. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralComfort
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 18, 2022
Inspired by Rev. Derek Elphick's talk last Sunday, I've been thinking about what gathering and community can do for us. One thing that came to mind was comfort and consolation. When tragedy strikes (or just when normal life is too hard), it can make all the difference in the world to have caring people reach out to us and offer us comfort. This Sunday, we will explore the theme of comfort in scripture and how we can get better at comforting one another - M. Smith | By Rev. Malcolm G. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - September 11, 2022
First "Community Service" in Bryn Athyn, with a children's talk followed by a sermon. No other services held in Bryn Athyn on this day. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn CathedralSpying Out the Land
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - September 04, 2022
The Children of Israel were on the edge of the Promised Land, about to begin a new era in the history of their people. They sent spies to see what this new land was like. When the spies came back they reported that there were some very good things in the land and also some very scary things. It's a new school year and you may be just beginning something new. There will probably be some very good things and, perhaps, some very scary things. What should you do? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralWhen to Move Forward
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 04, 2022
It's understandable that the Children of Israel doubted whether they could conquer the land of Canaan, once they'd heard the report from the spies. There were giants and fortified cities in their way. How do we know whether the obstacles in our way are something to be overcome or a sign from the Lord that we're going the wrong direction? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralI Will Run in the Way of Your Commandments
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - August 28, 2022
(Psalm 119:32). The Scriptures are full of examples of people running: Esau running to meet his brother Jacob, the multitudes running to hear Jesus preach, Peter and John running to the tomb on Easter morning. Running carries with it the idea of urgency, of doing something from set-purpose. As to our spirit, we’re all runners. But what are we running toward or from? | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn CathedralTo Run and Not Be Weary
Worship Service: Sermon only - August 28, 2022
(Isaiah 40:31) Running is hard to do half-heartedly. Either we do it or we don’t. In other words, we don’t run unless we’re intent on doing something important. This fits with the correspondence of running – "wanting to make something known" (AC 3804). As to our spirit, we "run" to communicate our intent, our desire. The goal is to run "in the way" of the Lord’s commandments, and away from the things that make us weary. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn CathedralDon't Add Good to Bad
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - August 21, 2022
When we have done something wrong, we might want to "fix" it by adding something good to it. The Lord asks us instead to remove the bad first, and that makes room for the good. | By Rev. Scott I. Frazier | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Woman at the Well
Worship Service: Sermon only - August 21, 2022
The Lord's conversation with the Samaritan woman about water, marriage, and worship shows us now to think, love, and obey the truth. It is a story calling us back to true worship for enlightenment and happiness. | By Rev. Scott I. Frazier | Bryn Athyn CathedralLet Your Light Shine
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - August 14, 2022
Can a person really "shine?" If so, what is it in us that shines and why would the Lord ask us to do this? Who benefits? We will be exploring the difference between "hiding" our light and letting it shine before others, and how the former is actually a disservice to our neighbor while the latter is an expression of love and gratitude, an expression of charity. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn CathedralShine
Worship Service: Sermon only - August 14, 2022
Moses' face was said to have "shone" when he came down from Mount Sinai with the second set of tablets (Ex. 34:29). It was such a startling moment for Aaron and the children of Israel that they were afraid to come near him. We talk about a person's face "shining" or "beaming" (and how pleasant that is) but in the spiritual world this happens quite literally (see TC 209). The Lord wants us to shine, not simply for our own wellbeing and happiness, but for the sake of our neighbor too. We will be exploring why it is that our friends, neighbors and family need to see us shine. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn CathedralSharing What We've Been Given
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - August 07, 2022
Sharing is hard - for children and also for adults. When we can remember all that the Lord has given us, it can help us to loosen our grip on what we have and feel less threatened by what the Lord has given to other people. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralBreaking Bread
Worship Service: Sermon only - August 07, 2022
As preparation for taking the Lord's Holy Supper, we will be talking about the significance of breaking bread and sharing it. Particularly in Western culture, there can be a lot of emphasis on individuality and working on our individual lives but the Lord's goal for us is to be part of a larger whole in which we give and receive freely. How can we work towards that goal? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralJohn's Vision of the Lord
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - July 31, 2022
John had followed Jesus for three years. But now John was an old man living on the Island of Patmos. And here the Lord appeared to John in a totally new way. John heard a loud voice and he turned to see the Lord standing in the midst of seven golden lamp stands. We will see what this is like in our lives when we hear the voice of the Lord calling us. | By Rt. Rev. Thomas L. Kline | Bryn Athyn CathedralJohn's Vision of the Lord
Worship Service: Sermon only - July 31, 2022
When John saw the Lord appearing before him on the Isle of Patmos, he was able to see and behold the very essence of God. John's vision is a vision that each of us is to behold as we come to see Him revealed in His Second Coming. This first chapter in the book of Revelation describes the miracle that each of us is to experience in our relationship with the Lord. | By Rt. Rev. Thomas L. Kline | Bryn Athyn CathedralCome and See

Worship Service: Family (may include music) - July 17, 2022
Even though the command to "go forward" seemed like certain doom, the Israelites did it anyway and the Red Sea was miraculously parted. But as the Israelites crossed the dry seabed, they looked back in horror to discover Pharoah's army driving towards them in chariots, but then the wheels of the chariots fell off! That changed everything. We will consider the spiritual significance of "wheels" and how they symbolize the power to go forward. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn Cathedral
