Simplicity
Worship Service: Sermon only - May 28, 2023
There’s a part of us that rebels and scoffs at things that appear simple. We tend to equate “simple” with being naïve and unsophisticated and because life in this world gets complicated in a hurry we imagine the fix to our problems will undoubtedly require a complex solution. In reality, the Lord wants us to keep things simple because simplicity is the gateway to all the joys and delights of heaven. To be “simple” means to be of one mind. Deep down inside we’re drawn to the mindset of simplicity because it provides a type of freedom that acts in unison with the Lord’s goals and purposes, thereby “making wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7). | By Rev. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - May 21, 2023
At our first Community Worship Service in September of last year we talked about gathering. This Sunday, at our last Community Worship Service of this school/fiscal year, we will again be talking about gathering—this time with a focus on the individual work that we need to do in order to be gathered by the Lord and the role we can play in helping the Lord to gather other people, one by one. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralTwo Become One
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - May 21, 2023
Marriage is all about two people becoming one person. But that isn't always what it feels like. It can feel more like two butting heads or missing each other entirely or being together in person but isolated in mind or heart. So how do two become one? What does it take to fulfil that promise of marriage? | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAThe Great Woman of Shunem

At the crucifixion, Jesus gave charge of His mother Mary to the disciple John. And this reflects the invitation the Lord offers to us all. The Lord forms the church in our hearts. In as much as we love the truth, our neighbor, and the Lord, the church grows within us. Yes, the church has structure from the doctrines the Lord has given us through His Word. Yes, there is a natural organization of people who share the values of those teachings. But it is all from the Lord's love, and it is from that love that the church finds life. The family service will focus on angelic mothers and guardian angels. And yet, the teachings are related. | By Rev. Pearse M. Frazier | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Church of Our Hearts

Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - May 14, 2023
The 4th Commandment directs us to “honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which Jehovah your God is giving you.” I hope you have a chance today to do some of that honouring. But of course, this commandment goes far beyond just one day of the year and beyond just one earthly mother. More broadly we can reflect on how we honour motherhood in general, and how those qualities of motherhood come into our spiritual practices. Whether your mother is still here or has passed on, whether your relationship with your mother is deep, conflicted, or non-existent, it is possible to honour spiritual motherhood. | By Rev. Jeremiah was invited by the Lord to go watch a potter at work. The vessel the potter was making got damaged so the potter started over again and made it into another vessel. Jeremiah’s experience ends with the Lord telling him, “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand” (Jeremiah 18:6). We will be using this powerful visual image to explore what it means to be in the Lord’s hands. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallJoseph and Potiphar's Wife

David had been anointed as the next King, but Saul was trying to kill him, and so he had to leave his wife Michal, and his best friend Jonathan, to run away and hide (1 Samuel 20). During this time David wrote many psalms about trusting in God. How can this story about David help us to trust in God as well when things aren’t going the way we want them to? | By Rev. Solomon J. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - May 07, 2023
The Teachings of the New Church describe heaven as a place of beauty and peace. Some of the passages go into intricate detail as to what we can expect there. But although heaven is a place that can be described as our future dwelling-place, it is much more than that too. The more we know about what really makes heave heaven, the more able we will be to create heaven on earth. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSACast the Net on the Right Side

After the Lord’s resurrection, His disciples went fishing. All night they caught nothing; but in the morning, when Jesus appeared on the shore and told them to cast the net on the right side of the boat, they did so – and they caught a huge number of fish (John 21). In 1st Kings 17, Elijah asked a widow for some bread during a famine. The widow only had enough for herself and her son, but she gave some to Elijah first, and miraculously didn’t run out of food. Love works in similar ways. What can we do when we feel like our tank is empty? | By Rev. Solomon J. Keal | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallBelieving the Unbelievable
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - April 30, 2023
When faced with some of the deepest challenges doubt can creep in. We can doubt that the Lord is going to somehow make it all ok; that our efforts will make any difference; that denying ourselves leads to more happiness than we can imagine. Yet the Lord calls us to believe in all of these “unbelievable” truths. If we wait until our belief is rock solid than we will end up waiting for forever; but if we have faith, and move forward with confidence, we will in the end see clearly the truth of what the Lord has told us. | By Rev. Worship Service: Family (may include music) - April 23, 2023
On any given day we are required to make all sorts of judgments - what to wear, what to eat, what to do or say, when to work and play, stay up or go to bed. Judgments come in all shapes and sizes - some help get us through the day, others help us prioritize, and some help build character. We will be looking at the different types of judgment that the Lord speaks about in His Word as a way of helping us make good and useful ones. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn Cathedral
