Rediscover What’s Important - The Parable of the Lost Coin
Worship Service: Informal Family - October 02, 2022
Think of something you've committed to - a job, a new habit, a friendship, a marriage or any project. We have so many high hopes, plans and ideals. But then things get messy, and it can be so easy to lose track of what's most important. In the parable of the Lost Coin from Luke 15, the Lord outlines a method of how to rediscover those treasures. | By Rev. Pearse M. Frazier | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallPraise

| By Rev. Thomas H. Rose | Bryn Athyn Cathedral“Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees”
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - September 25, 2022
It was unusual for the Pharisees and the Sadducees to agree about anything, but they were united in opposition to the Lord and His teaching. He compared their influence on the society at the time to leaven, although another time the Lord compared the kingdom of heaven to leaven added to bread dough. This is a story about how the Lord works with us to find what’s truly good in the world we live in. | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Use of Leaven
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 25, 2022
From the Law given to Moses to the Lord’s warnings to His disciples, leaven is used as a symbol of evil and falsity to be avoided. And yet the Lord also said, “the kingdom of heaven is like leaven.” (Matt. 13: 33) The Heavenly Doctrine reveals to us that evil and falsity are permitted by the Lord (carefully, under His Divine providence) to be of service as a “means of purification… promoting the union of goodness and truth in others” (DP 21). | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn CathedralA Heavenly Heritage
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 25, 2022
A person’s heritage is the practices and customs that have been handed down from the past and that in many ways define the group they are part of. To celebrate heritage is to celebrate where a person or group has come from and to appreciate the variety among other cultures. Within all these cultures though there is a uniting thread that holds us all together, that of a heavenly heritage, a heavenly way of life, passed down to us from the Lord. | By Rev. Worship Service: Family (may include music) - September 18, 2022
When someone we care about is hurting, we hurt too and we want to help them feel better. There are good ways and not so good ways that we might try to offer comfort. Let's learn from the Lord, our Comforter, how to offer comfort to people around us. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralComfort
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 18, 2022
Inspired by Rev. Derek Elphick's talk last Sunday, I've been thinking about what gathering and community can do for us. One thing that came to mind was comfort and consolation. When tragedy strikes (or just when normal life is too hard), it can make all the difference in the world to have caring people reach out to us and offer us comfort. This Sunday, we will explore the theme of comfort in scripture and how we can get better at comforting one another - M. Smith | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralPrepare the Way
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - September 18, 2022
John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the Lord. Without this preparation the people would not have been able to recognize the Lord’s innocence and love. Likewise, if we do not prepare through living a good life we will miss the presence of the Lord’s innocence and love. The way we prepare is through repentance. This week, take the time to think about how you would like the Lord to show up in your life: in love? In peace? In friendship? In integrity? Then take the steps that will allow you to receive the Lord in this way. The hard work of preparation will have been worth it when it brings the joy of the Lord’s presence. | By Rev. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - September 11, 2022
We talk of organizations as if they have a life of their own: "The company made some good decisions last years;" "The rugby team is making good progress." But of course, no organization does anything apart from the individual choices of its members. The church is no different. We may talk of the church as a separate entity that does things; the reality is that the church only exists insofar as the individual members are living and being the church. Each of us is a part of the greater whole, and the quality of the church will be determined by the quality of our lives. Rev. J. Bheki Dube also reads a lesson. | By Rev. The Children of Israel were on the edge of the Promised Land, about to begin a new era in the history of their people. They sent spies to see what this new land was like. When the spies came back they reported that there were some very good things in the land and also some very scary things. It's a new school year and you may be just beginning something new. There will probably be some very good things and, perhaps, some very scary things. What should you do? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralWhen to Move Forward
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 04, 2022
It's understandable that the Children of Israel doubted whether they could conquer the land of Canaan, once they'd heard the report from the spies. There were giants and fortified cities in their way. How do we know whether the obstacles in our way are something to be overcome or a sign from the Lord that we're going the wrong direction? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralWalking in the Lord's Commandments
Worship Service: Informal Family - September 04, 2022
This is Bryn Athyn Church School's theme this year, taken from Jeremiah 7:23. The Lord often told His disciples to "follow Me" as He walked around Israel. Why is "walking" a good way of describing the life of religion? | By Rev. Solomon J. Keal | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallThe Spirit of the Law
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - September 04, 2022
We all break rules from time to time. We speed. We tell a little lie. We browse Instagram at work when no one is around. We always tell ourselves that it is justified. But then someone else does the same, and our righteous indignation bristles: well if they speed, I can cut them off! They lied, so I can bad mouth them to others! They slack off at work, so I can too! What we fail to see is that we are using the technicality of breaking a rule to justify us harming someone else. The Lord calls us to something greater: to look beyond just the letter of the law and focus on the spirit, and from there to have compassion on those who perhaps don't stay within bounds as much as we might hope. | By Rev. Worship Service: Family (may include music) - August 28, 2022
(Psalm 119:32). The Scriptures are full of examples of people running: Esau running to meet his brother Jacob, the multitudes running to hear Jesus preach, Peter and John running to the tomb on Easter morning. Running carries with it the idea of urgency, of doing something from set-purpose. As to our spirit, we’re all runners. But what are we running toward or from? | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn CathedralTo Run and Not Be Weary
Worship Service: Sermon only - August 28, 2022
(Isaiah 40:31) Running is hard to do half-heartedly. Either we do it or we don’t. In other words, we don’t run unless we’re intent on doing something important. This fits with the correspondence of running – "wanting to make something known" (AC 3804). As to our spirit, we "run" to communicate our intent, our desire. The goal is to run "in the way" of the Lord’s commandments, and away from the things that make us weary. | By Rev. Derek P. Elphick | Bryn Athyn Cathedral
