Doctrinal Class - September 18, 2019
A three class series. Some discussion not included. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Cathedral Social HallService service, Part 2
Worship Service: Informal Family - August 25, 2019
Last week we focused on doing useful physical tasks that support our worship community. This Sunday, as we take service to a higher level, we will be looking for ways to serve each other's SPIRITUAL needs. We all need to be USEFUL, to LEARN and grow, to have COMMUNITY, HOPE, spiritual HEALING, and FREEDOM. These are ways of serving the six different kinds of spiritual neighbors that the Lord mentions in Matthew 25. We will be looking at how these show up in Isaiah 58. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallFinding Joy in Life's Challenges

"In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn CathedralFinding Joy in Life's Challenges
Worship Service: Informal Family - July 14, 2019
We all have things we might complain about, things that are hard. Today we talk about finding "joy" or contentment in the midst of hard things. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallFeast of Charity
Worship Service: Informal Family - May 19, 2019
Ancient “Feasts of Charity” were times to share both natural food and spiritual food. (Secrets of Heaven 7996, True Christianity 434) This service includes a potluck Feast of Charity during our regular worship time, with Holy Supper. (Public domain music is included in this recording). | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallDoubting Thomas
Worship Service: Informal Family - April 28, 2019
Three weeks ago we looked at Peter's Doubt before Easter, and this week we look at Thomas' Doubt after Easter (John 20:19-29). Thomas had a hard time believing that the Lord had risen, because he didn't get to see or touch the Lord. Can we believe in things we can’t see? Should we believe in things we can't see? | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallDoubt and Faith
Worship Service: Informal Family - April 07, 2019
As we prepare for Easter we look at Doubt and Faith. Peter was confident that he would follow the Lord even to death, but then he denied the Lord three times (Luke 22:20-60). We inevitably have times of doubt, which are necessary for our spiritual growth (Secrets of Heaven 1820). | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallGreg Bails Memorial Address

March 11, 1952 to March 18, 2019 | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn CathedralOur Gifts for the Lord
Worship Service: Informal Family - December 30, 2018
The wise men brought the Lord symbolic gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2). We too bring gold when we love the Lord, frankincense when we love one another, and myrrh when we wish to be of service. Yet when we reflect more deeply we see that these are actually gifts the Lord gives to us (Secrets of Heaven 9938.2). | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallGiving Thanks for the Lord's Coming
Worship Service: Informal Family - November 25, 2018
As we conclude our Thanksgiving weekend and start thinking of Christmas, our topic is “Giving Thanks for the Lord’s Coming.” Prophecies said that the Lord would come to conquer (Psalm 24), to judge (Psalm 50), and to comfort and heal (Isaiah 35, 40). How do we experience the Lord coming into our lives? | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallContentment over Materialism
Worship Service: Informal Family - October 28, 2018
Can we avoid letting anxiety and worry diminish our feelings of contentment, peace and satisfaction? Can material things reduce our quality of life as well as increase it? We continue our Journey series about the book of Daniel and Love Over Ego with the story of the next king of Babylon (Daniel chapter 5). Belshazzar has a great feast using the gold and silver vessels stolen from the temple in Jerusalem. A hand appears writing a mysterious warning. It seems that Belshazzar cares only about power and wealth. Daniel has no desire for the rewards of power and wealth that the king offers. He trusts the Lord for all his needs. We too can choose “Contentment over Materialism” like Daniel, who did not covet the rewards and riches that Belshazzar so highly valued. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallIntentions Over Expectations
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - October 07, 2018
(Includes songs) Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, "The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days"(Daniel 2:27-28). Worship Service: Sermon only - October 07, 2018
We focus on Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Daniel 2). Our ego feels entitled and makes demands, but compassion and conscience lead us to seek the Lord's will and to serve. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn CathedralFinding Heaven in Daily Life
Worship Service: Informal Family - July 29, 2018
Where are angels? Can our eyes be open to seeing angels around us? Where have you had a heavenly experience in your daily life? [Elisha] answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” (2 Kings 6:16) | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallThe Real Priesthood
Worship Service: Informal Family - July 01, 2018
We look at the story of the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10:25-37) After a man was beaten and almost killed, a priest walked by without a second glance. Then a Levite (a kind of low level priest) passed apathetically, but a despised Samaritan stopped to help. What guides our church? What determines the direction of our lives? This week the clergy of our denomination have been meeting to discuss our teachings and the state of our church, and to nominate a new executive bishop. Are these things important? How do we set our priorities? And if we want a change in our church, how do we go about that? | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallNo Temple in the New Jerusalem
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - May 27, 2018

Worship Service: Informal Family - May 06, 2018
When we do good for others, we can check our intentions first. Love is not genuine unless we first remove evil (True Christianity 435). “First be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:24). | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallListening to Sarah
Worship Service: Informal Family - February 25, 2018
Abraham was unhappy with his wife Sarah, but the Lord told Abraham, “Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice.” When we are unhappy with how things are going, it’s good to listen closely to the people we love. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallA Very Present Help in Trouble
Worship Service: Sermon only - December 10, 2017
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in Trouble. (Psalm 46:1) | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Lord is A Very Present Help in Trouble
Worship Service: Informal Family - December 03, 2017
The Lord came into the world in a very challenging time to help the human race through its troubles, and to be present with each of us through trying times. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallForgiving Others
Worship Service: Informal Family - October 08, 2017
Today we explore some of the challenges in forgiving others, balancing justice and compassion, and what to do if someone continually hurts you. Our text is the story of the unforgiving servant in Matthew. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallHow To Pray
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - July 09, 2017
Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:12-13) | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn CathedralIndependence from Ego
Worship Service: Informal Family - July 02, 2017
The U.S. founding fathers declared independence from tyranny in 1776. The Lord delivered the children of Israel from the tyranny of Pharaoh. How is tyranny a part of each of our lives, our ego? How can we declare independence from that? | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallI Have Called You By Name
Worship Service: Informal Family - May 07, 2017
"Even in our world a 'name' means more than just a name - it also means what someone is like. People's natures get attached to their names." (True Christianity 300) "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine." (Isaiah 43:1) | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallDiscerning Love; The Best Way to Help
Worship Service: Sermon only - March 26, 2017
"Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh?" (Isaiah 58:6-7) Closing prayer by Rev EH Carswell. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Cathedral
