What Inspires Kindness?
Worship Service: Sermon only - February 14, 2021
The second week of our five-week series on kindness addresses the question of where kindness comes from and what motivates it in us. | By Rev. Jeremy F. Simons | Bryn Athyn CathedralPreparing for Easter - the Road to Jerusalem
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 14, 2021
Easter is still pretty far away (7 weeks, more or less). But the time from Ash Wednesday (17 February this year) until Easter Sunday is generally seen as a time of preparation for the holiday. You may remember that last year we suggested giving up a bad habit or picking up a new spiritual practice in this time period. This year we'll suggest similar ways to prepare. Specifically, this Sunday we'll look at how Jesus' steady ascent from the backwater of Galilee along the road up to the metropolis of Jerusalem and His own death can help us prepare for our own celebration of His resurrection at Easter. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAPracticing Kindness: Abundant Love
Worship Service: Informal Family - February 14, 2021
“Practicing Kindness: Abundant Love” is the subject for the second week in our series on kindness. Genuine kindness is given freely and abundantly, going beyond the minimum that is required of us. This originates in the Lord wanting to give infinitely His love and wisdom as much as we can accept. Our story is about Rebekah Drawing Water (Genesis 24). | By Rev. John L. As we begin a five-week series on kindness, we look at the basic principle of looking to the good in others, which means noticing them and asking what they truly need. | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Golden Rule and Noticing Others

As we begin a five-week series on kindness, we look at the basic principle of looking to the good in others, which means noticing them and asking what they truly need. What does really noticing someone mean, and what does it require of us? | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn CathedralWhat Do People Do After Death
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 07, 2021
A lot of people have lost loved ones recently. When someone we love dies we can have a lot of questions. First, how do we know that they are still alive somewhere? If they are alive somewhere, what is their experience like? What do they do with their time? Is it a pleasant experience; is it an unpleasant experience? There is a lot of information about the afterlife in the teachings of the New Church. This Sunday we will scratch the surface of that body of teaching and try to cover some of the important basics of a New Church understanding of what life is like after death. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSARahab's Kindness
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - February 07, 2021
For week one of our five-week series on kindness, we will look at the story of Rahab showing kindness to the Israelite spies, in Joshua chapter two. How does this story help us remember to be considerate of other people? | By Rev. Solomon J. Keal | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallThe Peace of Jerusalem

The Lord is a healer. Four miracles show how people asked the Lord for healing, and what He did to heal them. What does this tell us about our approach to the Lord, and His response to us? | By Rev. Dr Andrew M. Dibb | Bryn Athyn CathedralFour Steps of Healing
Worship Service: Sermon only - January 31, 2021
The Lord is a healer. Four miracles show a progression of unchecked spiritual sickness in our lives. These stories show how the sufferers approached the Lord for healing, and what He did in each case to heal them. | By Rev. Dr Andrew M. Dibb | Bryn Athyn CathedralFalse Virtues
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 31, 2021
We put great pride in certain virtues, both as individuals and as a society. When we embody these virtues it is a sign that we are spiritually growing. But virtues are not as easy to identify as we like to believe. Certain qualities that we view as virtuous are in fact unrelated to meaningful virtue. To take a simple example, many people take busy-ness to be a virtue, as if always being busy reflects on their character. In actual fact, being overladen with work says nothing about one’s character: it may be a sign of love for others, but it could just as easily be nothing of the sort. We need to evaluate where we put our worth, and if it is in false virtues then we need to look to the Lord to find the virtues that truly reflect a good spiritual life. | By Rev. What do you need to know to be happy? How much proof do you need? We will talk about what is real and what looks real. | By Rev. Erik J. Buss | Bryn Athyn CathedralLift Up Your Eyes and Look
Worship Service: Sermon only - January 24, 2021
As we go through hard times we tend to look to the future when life, we hope, will be better. The Lord suggests that if we can look with the right eyes we also can see the good that is present right now. | By Rev. Erik J. Buss | Bryn Athyn CathedralPracticing to Be Spiritual Through Meditation
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 24, 2021
How do we get better at being the kind of people we want to be? How can we get better at catching ourselves before we do the mindless or hurtful things that we find ourselves prone to doing? The same way that we get better at most things: by practicing. Practicing meditation is one way to practice being more spiritually awake. This Sunday we will talk about a New Church Christian approach to meditation and then we will practice it together. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSADoes the End Justify the Means

Jesus said, “Make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home.” (Luke 16:9) | By Rev. Michael D. Gladish | Mitchellville, MDThe Ishmael and Isaac Rational Minds
Worship Service: Informal Family - January 24, 2021
In Genesis 16, Hagar gave birth to Ishmael. Later, in Genesis 21, Sarah gave birth to Isaac. These children of Abraham represent two different modes of our rational minds. In what ways is our “Ishmael” rational mind both helpful and dangerous? And how can we move towards operating more in our “Isaac” rational mind? | By Rev. Solomon J. Even though the Lord loves us, sometimes what the Lord tells us can seem harsh and hard to follow, like all kinds of commands. But the commands are the ones we need the most when we are having trouble following His ways. These are the teachings that will bring us real sight of how to live our lives, and lead to seeing the Lord present in our lives. | By Rev. Grant R. Schnarr | Bryn Athyn CathedralBelieving is Seeing: Healing Our Blindness
Worship Service: Sermon only - January 17, 2021
We are living in an unsettling time. Emotions are high, opinions stronger than ever, and charity wanes. We can think we are right and others are blind. But all of us are blind to some degree, from ignorance and from evil. But the key to seeing is the same - to allow the Lord to heal us with His strong truth and call to repentance, to open our eyes, even to the point that we not only see the truth about life, but our sight is opened to the Lord himself. | By Rev. Grant R. Schnarr | Bryn Athyn CathedralOne Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 17, 2021
It’s bad enough to not be in a great place, either outwardly or spiritually. But it’s much worse to not just be in a bad place, but to actually be going backwards, undoing any progress that has been made. When things are going the wrong direction it can lead to hopelessness about the future. It would be nice if the Lord said going backwards was fine, but He doesn’t: in fact, He makes it clear that it is dangerous and damaging thing to experience. Rather than accepting backsliding as just another part of life, the Lord can give us hope that our prior progress has not been lost and that a better future is possible. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAWhat Helps Good Decision-Making
Worship Service: Informal Family - January 17, 2021
No one hopes to make bad decisions. We all hope to accomplish good things which are our choices. King Jeroboam was promised that his descendants would continue to reign if he followed the Lord but then his fears led him to establish an idol for the people to worship. It was not a good decision. | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn Heilman Hall
