Does the End Justify the Means
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 24, 2021
Jesus said, “Make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home.” (Luke 16:9) | By Rev. Michael D. Gladish | Mitchellville, MDThe Ishmael and Isaac Rational Minds
Worship Service: Informal Family - January 24, 2021
In Genesis 16, Hagar gave birth to Ishmael. Later, in Genesis 21, Sarah gave birth to Isaac. These children of Abraham represent two different modes of our rational minds. In what ways is our “Ishmael” rational mind both helpful and dangerous? And how can we move towards operating more in our “Isaac” rational mind? | By Rev. Solomon J. Keal | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallOnly the good of charity of infancy can survive vastation

Even though the Lord loves us, sometimes what the Lord tells us can seem harsh and hard to follow, like all kinds of commands. But the commands are the ones we need the most when we are having trouble following His ways. These are the teachings that will bring us real sight of how to live our lives, and lead to seeing the Lord present in our lives. | By Rev. Grant R. Schnarr | Bryn Athyn CathedralBelieving is Seeing: Healing Our Blindness
Worship Service: Sermon only - January 17, 2021
We are living in an unsettling time. Emotions are high, opinions stronger than ever, and charity wanes. We can think we are right and others are blind. But all of us are blind to some degree, from ignorance and from evil. But the key to seeing is the same - to allow the Lord to heal us with His strong truth and call to repentance, to open our eyes, even to the point that we not only see the truth about life, but our sight is opened to the Lord himself. | By Rev. Grant R. Schnarr | Bryn Athyn CathedralOne Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 17, 2021
It’s bad enough to not be in a great place, either outwardly or spiritually. But it’s much worse to not just be in a bad place, but to actually be going backwards, undoing any progress that has been made. When things are going the wrong direction it can lead to hopelessness about the future. It would be nice if the Lord said going backwards was fine, but He doesn’t: in fact, He makes it clear that it is dangerous and damaging thing to experience. Rather than accepting backsliding as just another part of life, the Lord can give us hope that our prior progress has not been lost and that a better future is possible. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAWhat Helps Good Decision-Making
Worship Service: Informal Family - January 17, 2021
No one hopes to make bad decisions. We all hope to accomplish good things which are our choices. King Jeroboam was promised that his descendants would continue to reign if he followed the Lord but then his fears led him to establish an idol for the people to worship. It was not a good decision. | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallPolitics and Religion

A theme throughout the Word is that the Lord continually urges the people to choose whether they will follow Him or not. A very real human tendency in all of us is to make this choice a whole lot more complicated than it needs to be; however, it is really a simple choice to make. We will be able to witness a young adult's confession of faith at the beginning of the service to demonstrate that she is choosing to service the Lord. | By Rt. Rev. Bradley D. Heinrichs | Bryn Athyn CathedralChoosing Sides
Worship Service: Sermon only - January 10, 2021
A theme throughout the Word is that the Lord continually urges the people to choose whether they will follow Him or not. A very real human tendency in all of us is to make this choice a whole lot more complicated than it needs to be; however, it is really a simple choice to make. In many ways after you strip away all of the shades of gray, it really becomes a binary decision. Understanding the simplicity of choosing a side can often help to strengthen our commitment to serving the Lord. | By Rt. Rev. Bradley D. Heinrichs | Bryn Athyn CathedralMemorial Service for John T. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 10, 2021
Things do not feel particularly safe or secure in the world these days. There are many reasons for people to feel upset, fearful, and anxious. This Sunday we will reflect on passages from the Word about taking refuge in the Lord. How can we take refuge in the Lord? And then, from that place of security and peace, how can we move back into the world to face whatever we need to face? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSARe-Creation

As we begin a New Year, we will look at the story of the beginning of all things in the depiction of Creation in Genesis. How does each day of the Creation story describe aspects of new beginnings in our spiritual growth and resolutions that we may focus on in the new year? | By Rev. Solomon J. The beginning of a new year is a time that encourages people to think of the poast year and reflect on the new year beginning. Most of us would acknowledge that the last nearly ten months have been far from easy for many of us. What would the Lord like us to take away from these experiences? How can they serve the Lord's goals for our lives now and on to eternity? | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn CathedralMemorial Service for Edward K. Asplundh

Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 03, 2021
Transitions are a useful reminder to reflect on where we have been and where we are going. We see this most prominently with the New Year: it is a time of appreciating all that has happened in the previous year and looking forward to what the next year has to bring. Or in the case of 2020, trying to forget most of the previous year and hoping things improve in the new. But deep down, we all know that the changing of the calender does not actually change anything. Covid is still with is, the problems of yesterday are mostly the problems we still face today. Although these natural-world cycles are useful reminders, the reality is that spiritually, any moment can be a new day, a new year, a new opportunity for change. Instead of being chained to the steady march of time, we can make our own beginning at any point, when we look to the Lord and His spiritual goals for us. | By Rev. Worship Service: Family (may include music) - December 27, 2020
After Christmas life goes on. Life can seem pretty long and hard without something to look forward to. How can the stories of Simeon and Anna, two old people who meet Jesus shortly after His birth, help us to gain a different perspective on our lives? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSAShepherds and Angels
Worship Service: Informal Family - December 25, 2020
When Jesus was born the Gospel of Luke mentions two groups in particular that were present: shepherds who protected their flocks by night, and angelic armies sent from God on high. Both groups, in their own way, are powerful images of truth. Truth is not ideas. Truth, Divine Truth, is the Divine power that protects all goodness. Just as shepherds protect their sheep and angelic armies protect the heavens, truth, when lived, protects against all the forces of hell. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSA
