Basic Doctrines

Class Series - June 01, 1984

A course in the foundational doctrines for the New Church, with 12 college / adult level classes. (Interruptions asking the listener to stop and read a handbook and think about questions have been removed from these recordings.) Recording of Class 4 is incomplete. Missing text: "You see here a description of the spiritual sense of the first chapters of Genesis. As New Churchmen, we believe this sense is the "Spirit of Truth," and as we look at the books of the Word from correspondences we can allow this Spirit of Truth to guide us into all truth. In general, the spiritual sense of the Word has three levels. The level we just described was the one telling us how we can become angels, a "regenerative sense." There is a higher sense and a lower one, a sense that tells us about the Lord Himself, His work and His Love, and a sense below the regenerative sense which tells us about the Lord's Church on earth, rather than the individual of the Church. They all make one in that they all describe things apart from time and space. With care we can unlock each one of them. We can see in the Lord's Word how, from the beginning, He has cared for His Church, how His Church has developed from age to age. We can see how, in each of these periods, it has been possible for the people of the Church to become angels, to go to heaven and enjoy the life of heaven. Also, we can see how the Lord, in each of these eras, made Himself accessible to people. We can understand how the Lord prepared the way for His coming. We can see, in what is called the "celestial sense" of the Old Testament, a whole "blueprint" spelled out for the Lord's life on earth. In that same celestial sense in the New Testament we can see how the Lord accomplished the reality of His Glorification, and then in the plain truth of the Lord's New Word, the Writings of Swedenborg, we can see the Lord as King of Kings and Lord of Lords in heaven. We can see His Divine truth in fullness plainly revealed to us, His Word at hand ready for us to behold and enjoy. We can see the Spirit of Truth which indeed leads us into all truth. We need but to follow in that truth and it will make us free." | By Rt. Rev. Alfred II Acton | Bryn Athyn, PA
