Like A Fruitful Tree
Worship Service: Informal Family - November 11, 2018
The Lord tells us that our lives can be like fruitful trees and grapevines that bear bountiful grapes. They also can be like prickly thorn bushes or withered and barren plants. Our choices are what make the difference in what kind of plant we are. | By Rev. Eric H. Carswell | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallJoshua, Part 4 - Losing Battles
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - November 11, 2018
We will face failure, loss, and our own sins in life. It is part of the process and we should not expect otherwise. If we approach failure as feedback and take our failures to the Lord and look for our inner falsities that are part of the problem, we can face every failure and grow through process. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PAHeaven is Not Transferable
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - November 11, 2018
Wouldn't it be nice if someone else could do all the work of getting into heaven for us? In traditional Christianity this idea takes the form of "substitutionary atonement," the idea that because Christ suffered for our sin, we don't have to. This idea is rejected in the New Church, but it is still appealing to believe we don't have to do spiritual work because the Lord is doing it for us. While we could do nothing without the Lord, we actually need to take full responsibility for our spiritual lives. After all, no one else can do it for us. | By Rev. First Things First: Daniel in the lion's den. This is the final week of the Love over Ego series, and the story illustrates that ego eventually bends to see what is right if we are willing to hold firm to following the Lord. | By Rev. Erik J. Buss | Bryn Athyn CathedralLove Wins
Worship Service: Informal Family - November 04, 2018
In the final week of “Love Over Ego,” we look at the story of Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). The Babylonian governors got King Darius to make a law that everyone had to worship him. Daniel continued to pray to the Lord, and so he was thrown in the lion’s den. How does this story illustrate love finally winning over ego? | By Rev. Solomon J. We’re doing a series called “Appealing Heresies” which is about ideas that sound good and sound true but actually are quite problematic when you think them through. This Sunday evening we’re talking about the appealing idea that everyone can go to heaven, no matter what they believe. Many people believe this. Many people think this is what the New Church teaches. It’s not. What’s wrong with this idea? Come on Sunday evening as we unpack the implications of this appealing heresy and try to understand what the Lord actually teaches on this topic. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSADaniel in the Lion's Den

Worship Service: Informal Family - October 28, 2018
Can we avoid letting anxiety and worry diminish our feelings of contentment, peace and satisfaction? Can material things reduce our quality of life as well as increase it? We continue our Journey series about the book of Daniel and Love Over Ego with the story of the next king of Babylon (Daniel chapter 5). Belshazzar has a great feast using the gold and silver vessels stolen from the temple in Jerusalem. A hand appears writing a mysterious warning. It seems that Belshazzar cares only about power and wealth. Daniel has no desire for the rewards of power and wealth that the king offers. He trusts the Lord for all his needs. We too can choose “Contentment over Materialism” like Daniel, who did not covet the rewards and riches that Belshazzar so highly valued. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallJoshua, Part 3 - Spiritual Combat
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - October 28, 2018
The Lord leads us into spiritual combat, the conflict between truth and falsity, between lusts and love. The key to victory is marching according to the 10 Commandments. If we encircle false thinking and lustful behavior with the Ten Commandments, the Lord fights for us. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PAWhat Do You Value?

King Belshazzar and his one thousand guests drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and Iron, wood and stone. In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote opposite the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. (Daniel 5:4-5) | By Rev. Eric H. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - October 28, 2018
You can’t buy your way into heaven, no matter how much wealth you amass. That won’t come as a surprise to most of you. Yet somehow, subconsciously, we end up trying. Every time we feel entitled to reward because of our good deeds, we have diminished good deeds to a mere currency with which we can buy a slice of heaven. Every time we feel slighted for the ill fortune that befalls us in spite of our goodness, we have reduced God’s living Providence into a mere balance sheet of good countered by evil. It is only when we realize that goodness is its own reward that we can be free from the allure of heaven as a reward. Heaven is not a reward; heaven is the natural result of a life of goodness. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSA
