The Christmas story takes place during a census, which would have been an inconvenience for Mary and Joseph (Luke 2:1-3). But providentially this led to the Lord’s birth in Bethlehem. In 1812 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm first published their collection of old tales. Devoutly Christian, the brothers believed that "fairy tales are survivals of an ancient faith that goes back to the earliest times, a faith which is expressed in the pictorial representations of things that go beyond the senses." We begin a series this week leading up to Christmas. As we conclude our Thanksgiving weekend and start thinking of Christmas, our topic is “Giving Thanks for the Lord’s Coming.” Prophecies said that the Lord would come to conquer (Psalm 24), to judge (Psalm 50), and to comfort and heal (Isaiah 35, 40). Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - November 25, 2018
This Sunday we have the privilege of witnessing and taking part in the two sacraments: Baptism and Holy Supper. In some ways these two rituals seem worlds apart. In one, water is poured over a child's head as he is dedicated to the Lord. In the other we eat bread and drink wine, symbolic of taking in the Lord's love and wisdom. Yet these two rituals contain the whole span of spiritual life. Baptism represents the very first introduction to the Lord, the first glimmers of spiritual life. Holy Supper represents the fulfillment of that life, as we take in the Lord Himself to dwell within us. They are like two gates, and when we have gone through both, we are in heaven. | By Rev. On our Thanksgiving Day the service included a procession of fruit offerings for the needy and the sermon was actually a two-part "family talk" for all ages.
