The Widow's Oil
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - May 12, 2024
(2 Kings 4:1-7) A poor widow saved her two sons when her small jar of oil kept pouring and pouring into borrowed vessels. As the Lord prepares us for life in heaven, there’s a lot we can learn from other people. But in the end, the Lord wants us to use the goodness and truth He provides as if it actually belonged to us. | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn CathedralBorrow Vessels, Shut the Door
Worship Service: Sermon only - May 12, 2024
2 Kings 4: 1-7. To make possible the miraculous regeneration of her small jar of oil, Elisha instructed the indebted widow to “borrow vessels” and “shut the door.” The imagery here suggests that our spiritual lives develop as a result of some combination of both “borrowed states” and the private decisions of our conscience. | By Rev. Worship Service: Informal Family - November 20, 2022
On the cross, the Lord told one of the robbers, “Today, you will be with Me in paradise.” The story of Moses at the end of his life, on Mount Nebo, seeing the promised land is a reminder to us that heaven is “right there.” Do we see it? Getting to heaven is the culmination of all that the Lord’s providence does in our lives. Note: Background music is included by permission of the copyright owner John Odhner | By Rev. Worship Service: Family (may include music) - September 25, 2022
It was unusual for the Pharisees and the Sadducees to agree about anything, but they were united in opposition to the Lord and His teaching. He compared their influence on the society at the time to leaven, although another time the Lord compared the kingdom of heaven to leaven added to bread dough. This is a story about how the Lord works with us to find what’s truly good in the world we live in. | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Use of Leaven
Worship Service: Sermon only - September 25, 2022
From the Law given to Moses to the Lord’s warnings to His disciples, leaven is used as a symbol of evil and falsity to be avoided. And yet the Lord also said, “the kingdom of heaven is like leaven.” (Matt. 13: 33) The Heavenly Doctrine reveals to us that evil and falsity are permitted by the Lord (carefully, under His Divine providence) to be of service as a “means of purification… promoting the union of goodness and truth in others” (DP 21). | By Rev. Worship Service: Informal Family - October 24, 2021
When the Lord visited Mary and Martha in their home, Mary sat and listened but Martha was "distracted with much serving." (Luke 10: 38-42) What if food had been served a little late that evening? Can we be content with the passage of time and patiently listen? | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallConsider the Lilies of the Field

Many treasures from all over the world were brought to King Solomon in Jerusalem; it all seemed so good. But the Lord teaches us that things that are truly good only come from Him. | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn CathedralConsider the Lilies of the Field

King Solomon's material wealth and worldwide reputation for wisdom are described in fascinating detail in the Word. What might those descriptions tell us about our modern world and why did the Lord say none of it compared to a blossoming flower? | By Rev. Worship Service: Informal Family - February 28, 2021
For week four of the “Practicing Kindness” series, we’ll talk about times when showing kindness can feel like a challenge. Worship Service: Informal Family - March 22, 2020
The Word has many passages that talk about "remembering" or "not forgetting." In the story of Noah's Ark, "remembering" is mentioned 3 times. How are "remembering" or "not forgetting" different? How are they the same? What should we be remembering? The video version of this service is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqkrXDj7wCM | By Rev. Doctrinal Class - December 04, 2019
A 3 class series: Christmas Eve, Christmas Morning, Christmas Day. In our celebration of the Lord's advent, many of our traditions are attached to specific times-of-day. Times-of-day have spiritual meanings which relate in significant ways to prophecies, stars and doctrines about the Lord's birth into the world. Some discussion not included. | By Rev. Worship Service: Informal Family - November 17, 2019
I've been especially interested these days in the idea that there are things we find “uplifting.” We'll all have different ideas about what they are, but maybe we'd all agree with the words of King David in the last verse of the 28th Psalm, where he prays that the Lord “lift His people up forever.” It might also be worth considering what David says earlier in that psalm, where he talks about “going down into the pit,” kind of the opposite of being uplifted. But the Lord can't lift us up without cooperation on our part. We might even try, as if on our own, to lift ourselves up. The story of the man at the Pool of Bethesda in John 5 is a good illustration of that. In the Levitical blessing (at the end of Numbers 6), we ask the Lord to “lift up His countenance” upon us. What might that actually be like? | By Rev. Kurt Hyland Asplundh | Bryn Athyn Heilman Hall
