Love Over Ego - Part 5 - The Writing is on the Wall
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - March 10, 2019
The phrase “the writing is on the wall” comes from the story that we’re going to be exploring on Sunday. During a wild and profane party, the new king of Babylon, Belshazzar, sees a hand write a mysterious message on the wall. And the meaning of the message, as explained by Daniel, is that Belshazzar has been evaluated, found to be deficient, and so will have the kingdom taken from him. In our process of working to have love triumph over our ego, we will have times when the writing is on the wall for some aspect of our lives. Are we willing to have that part of us die? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSALove over Ego, Part 6 - Love and Wisdom Win

Daniel faces a trial when he chooses his pursuit of and dependance on the Lord even with the potential consequences of death. The only thing that can bring us to this place of peace and confidence in the midst of trial is the marriage of love and wisdom. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PALove Over Ego, Part 5 - Holiness

Belshazzar makes a feast and uses the sacred vessels from the temple of Jerusalem in his feast, and God sends a message of judgement for his abuse of these sacred things. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PALove Over Ego - Part 4 - Unashamed Humility

When a person hits rock bottom, there can be a lot of shame. This is especially true if it seemed for a long time that he had everything together, only to have it all come crashing down. But shame is not where a person has to end. Every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. When we take that opportunity, the greatest lesson we learn is that of embracing humility and rising out of shame. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSALove Over Ego - Part 3 - The Freedom to Say No

This Sunday we will be working through the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego and how they were not willing to bow down to an idol that Nebuchadnezzar set up, even if it would mean that they would be burned to death in a furnace as punishment. How did they have such strength in their convictions? Would we be willing to stick to our faith if doing so could result in us facing similarly dire consequences? | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSALove over Ego, Part 4 - Humility Over Shame
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 24, 2019
Nebuchadnezzar learns humility before the Lord through the loss of his sanity. Our sense of humility before the Lord can be a chief virtue that guides and directs our sense of shame. At the same time, having a community that pegs our sense of shame in relationship to the Lord's values is useful to our spiritual health. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PALove Over Ego, Part 3 - Confidence Over Arrogance
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 17, 2019
Nebuchadnezzar demanded that the Jews in exile, participate in the court worship of idols on the threat of death. The three Jews in question refused because they were not going to commit idolatry. Idolatry in our age is ways of thinking and living, it is the things that we make most important in our life. Can we have the courage to think and live as the Lord invites us to even at pain of persecution and rejection by others? | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PALove Over Ego - Part 2 - Wisdom in Humility
Worship Service: Childrens Talk only - February 17, 2019
The path to wisdom lasts a lifetime, and even then is never truly finished. Even the wisest man alive is pitifully ignorant compared to the vast wisdom of the Lord. Yet still we strive to grow in wisdom and intelligence, as we ought to do. We turn to experts, to podcasts and books, to life experiences and rationally thought-out plans. We expect that if we only had the right information we would be able to master life. Paradoxically though, wisdom does not ultimately come from grasping at worldly knowledge: it comes when we humbly look to the Lord and acknowledge our own shortcomings. That is the wisdom that will let us master life. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAThe Presence that Preserves Us

Daniel's wisdom is a product of His dependance on the Lord. When faced with a situation, it is His reliance on the Lord even for his understanding that brings him and his friends through. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PATo Be Content with One's Lot

Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 10, 2019
This Sunday we begin our series on the Daniel story, Love Over Ego. When the story begins, Daniel is taken far away from his home to live in captivity in Babylon. But Daniel is given an opportunity to get special treatment and to move up the ladder. When we find ourselves in similar difficult circumstances it’s very easy to justify doing whatever we need to do in order to get ahead. But Daniel, instead, does not just go with the flow and take what’s given to him; he takes a stand for what the Lord teaches. Come on Sunday to hear what happens to him and to reflect on how we also can take a stand for what the Lord teaches. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSALove over Ego, Part 1 - True Identity
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - February 03, 2019
Daniel sought to maintain his Jewish identity within a foreign culture, but also to succeed within that culture. Daniel stove to not defile himself according to Jewish law, and chose to pursue this by regulating his consumption. Paying attention to what we take in and where it comes from is the starting place for choosing an identity in the Lord. | By Rev. Derrick Lumsden | Sarver, PAHumility and Shame

First Things First: Daniel in the lion's den. This is the final week of the Love over Ego series, and the story illustrates that ego eventually bends to see what is right if we are willing to hold firm to following the Lord. | By Rev. Erik J. Buss | Bryn Athyn CathedralLove Wins

In the final week of “Love Over Ego,” we look at the story of Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). The Babylonian governors got King Darius to make a law that everyone had to worship him. Daniel continued to pray to the Lord, and so he was thrown in the lion’s den. How does this story illustrate love finally winning over ego? | By Rev. Solomon J. Can we avoid letting anxiety and worry diminish our feelings of contentment, peace and satisfaction? Can material things reduce our quality of life as well as increase it? We continue our Journey series about the book of Daniel and Love Over Ego with the story of the next king of Babylon (Daniel chapter 5). Belshazzar has a great feast using the gold and silver vessels stolen from the temple in Jerusalem. A hand appears writing a mysterious warning. It seems that Belshazzar cares only about power and wealth. Daniel has no desire for the rewards of power and wealth that the king offers. He trusts the Lord for all his needs. We too can choose “Contentment over Materialism” like Daniel, who did not covet the rewards and riches that Belshazzar so highly valued. | By Rev. John L. Odhner | Bryn Athyn Heilman HallWhat Do You Value?

King Belshazzar and his one thousand guests drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and Iron, wood and stone. In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote opposite the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. (Daniel 5:4-5) | By Rev. Eric H. In week four of “Love over Ego,” we look at Daniel chapter four, in which Nebuchadnezzar had a dream of a tall tree that was chopped down to a stump. Our ego sometimes thinks too highly of ourselves, but our ego can also feel the shame of being ‘cut down to size.’ How can we instead find true humility, which opens us back up to the Lord’s love and joy? | By Rev. Solomon J. Keal | Bryn Athyn Heilman Hall
