We Have Come to Worship
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - December 03, 2023
Worship is not something we think of as difficult. Yet there is a lot more to worship than meets the eye. The deeper meaning of worship shows up in the story of the wise men. These men did not simply worship the Lord from where they were. They got up and traveled to find the Lord and give him unique gifts. Likewise, if we want to truly worship the Lord, we have to seek Him out, and offer Him gifts of love, faith, usefulness. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAPrayer, 3: A Community of Prayer
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - August 06, 2023
Our final sermon on prayer will focus on prayers for other people. It’s hard to know exactly what these prayers do; they might not be as obvious as prayers for our own spiritual growth or that have to do with our personal relationship with the Lord. But when we pray for other people we are joined together in a heavenly community, one that turns to the Lord and looks to Him as the One who brings us all together. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAPrayer 2 - The Power of Prayer
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - July 30, 2023
Last week we looked at how to pray. But this week we examine the question, what does prayer do? There are many answers to this question, and as many answers as to what prayer does NOT do that we wish it did. But at heart, prayer connects us to the Lord, so that we can receive His power to be reborn and regenerated. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAPrayer, 1 - The Practice of Prayer
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - July 23, 2023
We are starting a three-part series on prayer. This week the focus is on the practice of prayer, practice both in the sense of applying an idea to real life and an activity done with the intention of improving. Because I would guess that most of us (not all, but most) could use some improvement in our prayer lives. The New Church has something of a history of being stiff and uncomfortable with prayer. This series will be an opportunity to become more active with our prayers and appreciate the power that prayer has. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSAWhat Should We Ask For?
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - May 15, 2022
When we pray we are often asking for something. There is nothing wrong with this; in fact the Lord encourages us to do this. But we should give careful thought to what we ask for. This principle is illustrated in the story of King Solomon. When the Lord gave him the opportunity to ask for anything he wished, Solomon’s answer reflects a true understanding of what we need from the Lord and the kinds of things we should seek from Him. This Sunday we will explore what we can learn from Solomon’s request. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSADaily Prayer
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 30, 2022
How often do you talk to the Lord? Is it often enough? Communication is a crucial aspect of any relationship and our relationship with the Lord is no different. If, for example, we only communicate with the Lord when we’re desperate and can’t think of anything else to try, that will severely limit our relationship with the Lord. If, on the other hand, we have a relationship with the Lord in which we’re talking to Him several times a day, that can be part of us having a real, active, and meaningful relationship with Him. Let’s talk about what prayer on a day-to-day basis looks like and how we can make progress in our regular communication with the Lord. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - January 24, 2021
How do we get better at being the kind of people we want to be? How can we get better at catching ourselves before we do the mindless or hurtful things that we find ourselves prone to doing? The same way that we get better at most things: by practicing. Practicing meditation is one way to practice being more spiritually awake. This Sunday we will talk about a New Church Christian approach to meditation and then we will practice it together. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSABeyond the Prayer
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - August 09, 2020
Over the last three weeks we have looked at the Lord’s Prayer. In our services, we often follow the Lord’s Prayer with the familiar phrase, “Lord, forgive us our trespasses; as we forgive those who trespass against us.” This is based on the teaching that Jesus gave immediately after giving His disciples His Prayer. Having prayed, it is a useful reminder that we must also live the words that we have spoken; that we must actively work on repentance from sin so we can forgive and be forgiven. So this week we leave the Prayer behind as a spoken conversation with the Lord and turn to how we live it in our daily lives. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSARevisiting the Lord's Prayer - Part 3 - Lead Us Not Into Temptation
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - August 02, 2020
This Sunday we will finish revisiting of the Lord’s Prayer by reflecting on the last two sentences of it. We will be focusing particularly on how the Lord teaches us to pray in times of temptation, crisis, and evil. Sometimes it takes things getting pretty bad to make us resort to giving prayer a try. But, especially if we’re out of practice with praying, and our desperate prayer seems to go unanswered, that can be pretty hard to take. Let’s revisit how to pray about hard things and when things get hard. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Westville, RSARevisiting the Lord's Prayer - Part 2 - Freely Gotten, Freely Given Away
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - July 26, 2020
As we continue our way through the Lord's Prayer the focus pivots away from the God who we pray to and comes to rest on us: we ask that He give us our daily bread and that He forgive our debts. In these two phrases we see the immensity of what we receive from the Lord, and our inability to repay it. Thankfully, He does not ask that we repay. Simply that as we have received, we in turn give. In giving away what we have to others and forgiving our debtors, we also receive from the Lord. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSARevisiting the Lord's Prayer - Part 1 - Our Father
Worship Service: Childrens Talk & Adult Sermon - July 19, 2020
We say the Lord’s Prayer regularly but because of that familiarity we can sometimes forget the meaning and significance of the words that we’re saying. Over the next three weeks we will be revisiting the prayer that the Lord taught us so that it can become all the more meaningful for us when we say those familiar words. | By Rev. Malcolm G. After the children of Israel safely crossed through the Red Sea, they sang and danced for joy (Exodus 15). Why is it that singing and dancing are some of the ways that we sometimes express joy? Every year we celebrate the founding of Kainon School with a special worship service. This is a great way to celebrate Kainon, because its real foundation is the Lord Himself. This year, in keeping with the school theme of "Prayer from the Heart" we will look at how prayer gives us a foundation that can carry us through even the most difficult of times. | By Rev. Joel C Glenn | Westville, RSABuilding an Upper Room for the Lord
Worship Service: Informal Family - February 24, 2019
A woman in the city of Shunem asked her husband to build a small upper room on the wall of their house for Elisha the prophet to stay in when he passed by. Elisha was no longer just a visitor to their home, but now he dwelt with them. Come and hear how we can build an upper room in our minds and lives where the Lord can dwell with us. | By Rt. Rev. The Wise Men gave their gifts because combined the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh symbolize all worship owed to the Lord. In total, worship is must be from the heart, head, and life.
