Two Gateways to Eternal Life
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - June 04, 2023
The teachings of the New Church call baptism and Holy Supper two gateways to eternal life. Last Sunday we got to witness a baptism; this Sunday we get to have Holy Supper. This may be the first time a number of children will be witnessing Holy Supper and so the short family talk for this service will be a basic overview of the use and purpose of Holy Supper. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Lord Wants to Have Supper with You
Worship Service: Sermon only - June 04, 2023
When considering whether to take Holy Supper, we are often focused on whether we feel worthy to take it. This Sunday the short sermon will focus on what the Lord would like. | By Rev. Malcolm G. Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Importance of Baptism
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - May 28, 2023
This Sunday we have a very special service. One of the students in our school will be baptized. Baptism is SO important that even the Lord got baptized. Our teachings tell us that it is a sign and memorial. But what is so special about baptism? And why is it so important? Join us on Sunday to both celebrate the occasion and to learn a little bit more about this sacrament. | By Rev. Jeffrey Smith | Bryn Athyn CathedralBaptism: The Spiritual Within the Natural
Worship Service: Sermon only - May 08, 2016
This message looks at the power that lies within the sacrament of baptism, and consider the spiritual motivation that is reflection in the natural ritual. This motivation is to more fully understand the Lord of God and to progressively become more the person that he would like each of us to be. | By Rev. Garry B. Walsh | Phoenix, AZThe Most Holy Act of Worship
Worship Service: Sermon only - November 24, 2013
We are told that taking Holy Supper is the most holy act of worship. Why is this? What makes it so holy and how can we experience that holiness? | By Rev. Erik J. Buss | Bryn Athyn CathedralThe Power of Rituals
Worship Service: Family (may include music) - November 24, 2013
We live in a world that wants us to focus on the inner character of any situation without paying attention to the external. Yet there is real value in ritual and patterns in our lives, especially in our spiritual lives. | By Rev. Erik J. Buss | Bryn Athyn CathedralHow to Worship with Your Life
Worship Service: Sermon only - July 23, 2006
"'...And what does Jehovah require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?'" What does the Lord require of us, when it comes to worship? Why do we come to church? Why do we pray? Why do we read the Word? All these activities make up what might be called the life of piety. This sort of worship, though, is only external. The Lord has told us several times that vain repetitions, extravagant ritual and external worship in general is not what He is chiefly concerned with. External worship is merely a representative of -- and support for -- real worship. Internal, true worship is a life of charity. It is repenting, shunning evil, being useful, and doing good works for our neighbors. This doesn't mean external ritual doesn't matter. External worship is like clothing: we need it, but it can be changed. The only requirement is that it serve internal worship. Proper external worship is whatever ritual we choose that inspires, instructs and prepares us so that we may make our daily lives into continual, true worship, which is the life of charity. To see how this is so, read Micah 6:6-8, Matthew 6:5-8, and Secrets of Heaven 10143:3-5, 6, and then listen to the full sermon. Text available at http://www.TheoBlog.com/ | By Rev.
