Daniel sought to maintain his Jewish identity within a foreign culture, but also to succeed within that culture. Daniel stove to not defile himself according to Jewish law, and chose to pursue this by regulating his consumption. Paying attention to what we take in and where it comes from is the starting place for choosing an identity in the Lord.
